The DSH (German abbreviation for Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) is a language proficiency test required for entry to a German university and to undertake all classes in the German language. It consists of a written and an oral examination, the written part being a precondition for the oral one.
The grading scale of DSH is between 1–3 with 3 being the best possible grade. A detailed breakdown of the percentile achieved in each part of the examination will also be given on the certificate. Proficiency levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR): DSH 1 (≥57%): Level B2.
DSH-2 means:
Access to all degree courses. A DSH examination passed at level DSH-2 verifies the language skills required for admission to or enrolment in all degree programmes and courses at all universities.
DSH-3 means:
Access to all degree courses. Achievement of level DSH-3 shows particularly good German language skills. DSH-3 is above the level required for admission or enrolment.

DSH test
The DSH (Deutschen Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang) is a language test demonstrating enough knowledge of the German language to be admitted to a German university.
The test to get the DSH is organized by the university itself or from other schools commissioned to make the test on behalf of the university.
One of the main difference with the testDAF is that the latter is a standardized test, this means the structure of the test is always the same only the content is different, regardless where you take the language test. Consider also that each test is corrected from the testDAF-Institute.
On the contrary for the DHS there are guidelines, but in general, the implementation is done by the university, so the DSH is not a standardized and centralized test like the testDAF. This means the difficulty of the exam and its structure change among different universities.
This also implies that a DSH exam is not equally recognized by all universities and it is possible, if you move to another university, you have to re-do the DSH test.
For the sake of completeness, I have to add that there are currently attempts to standardize the DSH test, but the situation is still confused.
The DSH is also comprised of 4 parts, like the testDAF, but the final mark is unique, differently from testDAF.
The exam comprises a written and an oral test. The written test is intended to evaluate the following:
listening comprehension
written comprehension
text production
The oral test evaluates the following:
comprehension of a partner
ability to express a concept in an independent way
linguistic and lexical correctness
pronunciation and intonation
Each test (written and oral) is graded for itself and the final mark is the minimum between the two.
For each test the grade is given calculating the percents of the number of achieved points over the total points and is expressed as follow:
DSH-3, at least 82% of the total points
DSH-2, between 67 and 81%
DSH-1, between 57 and 66%
with less than 57% the test is failed.
So for instance:
if in the written test you get 76% of the available points, the mark of the written test is DSH-2,
if in the oral test you get the 65% of the available points, the mark of the oral test is DSH-1,
the final total mark for the test is the minimum of the two, then DSH-1.

DSH German Language Proficiency Test for the Admission to Higher Education
A few initial remarks concerning the DSH at the beginning:
The DSH is a university language exam which certifies sufficient German language proficiency for taking up university studies in German. Proof of such proficiency is required at the time of enrolment. Exemptions from the mandatory language exam are stipulated by the local DSH examination regulations of the University of Bonn, available for download under “DSH Regulations”.
Please note that admission to a master’s program or doctorate does not exempt you from the DSH requirement; the only exceptions are degree programs in which English or another foreign language is the official language of instruction. Furthermore, having graduated in German Studies (Germanistik) at a foreign university does not waive the DSH requirement. Applications for the exemption from the DSH examination have to be submitted to the examination chairman. The examination regulations for the DSH at the University of Bonn are based on the general regulations for German language exams at German academic institutions (RO-DT) of 2011. In spite of this, the DSH at the University of Bonn is not registered with the German Rector’s Conference (HRK) or with the German as a Foreign Language Association (FaDaF). The acceptance of DSH Exams taken at the University of Bonn is therefore at the discretion of each university.
Please take note of the examination dates given below. There will be no additional DSH examination prior to the beginning of the respective semester. Due to administrative and financial reasons, we cannot offer individual examinations. The DSH is subject to a fee! It consists of a written and an oral examination, starting with the written examination. You can find a DSH mock exam here.
Please note:
Applicants from non-EU or non-EEA countries can only take the DSH at the University of Bonn after having received a letter of admission to the desired degree program at the University of Bonn!
Once you pass the DSH examination with a result of DSH 2, you are eligible for admission to all degree programs at the University of Bonn.
